Independent Spotlight is a continuing series on Stewart’s blog. The series revolves around independent artists and bands sending their music to Brett to review. No band is promised a positive review, and all music is reviewed honestly in an effort to better independent music.
In this evening’s edition of the Independent Spotlight, we shine our gaze on Elmont, an alternative rock outfit from North Texas that recently released their debut single, ‘Home.’ The four-piece band recorded at War Room Studios and the record was mastered at Crystal Clear Sounds. Thus, right out of the gate Elmont boasts a studio quality presentation. Is ‘Home’ a single worth putting in your rotation for the new year? Let’s delve into it and find out.
Elmont is one of those groups that borders the line between alternative and folksy Americana. (Or at least that’s a sound that ‘Home’ introduces.) There’s a bevy of acoustic instrumentation scattered around the landscape of the new single, and it’s a stunning tune that’s highlighted most poignantly by its sweeping string sections and delicate lyricism.
At its core, ‘Home’ is a lovely song about the comfort and love surrounding one’s home and not forgetting about where one came from. The lead vocalist has a particularly interesting voice; there’s a poignant rasp and emotion to it, and I dig that. Elmont clearly made the decision to put that at the forefront of their single, and as such, it’s a very short, snappy tune that doesn’t get bogged down in instrumental solos or the like.
There is a more troubling side to ‘Home,’ though, because that comfort and familiarity of home is lost in the song when the songwriter realizes that their home has moved on, evolved, and changed into an entirely different beast than what it was when they grew up there. “I remember where I came from,” the lead vocalist croons, “it just seems that home forgot about me.”
The production of ‘Home’ is incredibly solid, and Elmont has joined the elite rank of indie acts that released a terrific debut. However, they do have to maintain that high bar they’ve set for themselves, and continue to innovate within and grow their sound along the way. ‘Home’ is a perfect track to ring in the new year tonight, and it’s worth including in your independent music collection as an elegant finale to 2016.
'Home' is now on iTunes and Spotify.
