Independent Spotlight is a continuing series on Stewart’s blog. The series revolves around independent artists and bands sending their music to Brett to review. No band is promised a positive review, and all music is reviewed honestly in an effort to better independent music.
Quite some time ago, I heavily lauded Russian pianist and songwriter Maria Kheyfets for her remarkable EP ‘A Million Little Moments.’ Her sound infused pop, jazz, R&B, and other influences into an exceptional sonic palette unlike anything else in the independent music scene. The performer is now back with a new single and accompanying music video entitled ‘Your Moon.’ Does it stack up to its predecessors?
‘Your Moon’ is a stunningly surreal affair. Queuing up this song in a well-equipped studio was a gorgeous treat. Kheyfets’ production is some of her finest, elegantly accenting her hauntingly beautiful vocals and simple, but immensely effective piano performance. (Big shout out to her producer Anthony Galatis here.) There’s a uniquely ethereal nature to ‘Your Moon,’ as if Kheyfets plucked the lyrics and melody from the stars themselves one evening. That melody was co-written by Mark Cawley and Morten Franck.
The lovely composition is only as strong as the lyricism partnered with it, however, and that department is where Kheyfets shines brightest. “If you find a different flame, may this night remain the same,” she croons. “The echo that forever gleams, etched in your haunted dreams. I’ll be your moon.” Thematically and structurally, it’s very reminiscent of a landmark song that had its 50th anniversary two days ago: ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror.’
Kheyfets continues to defy the norms of the indie music scene with her music video for ‘Your Moon,’ too, as the video directed by Alexander Darby is simply beautiful. The well shot endeavor showcases a couple interpretive dancing in a darkened forest clearing. There’s something about that imagery that’s so perfectly linked to the lyricism of ‘Your Moon,’ and it’s a video very much worth seeing. It stands taller than most music videos released from artists with massive followings in the “mainstream.”
Through and through, ‘Your Moon’ is a piece of art. The music, lyrics, and accompanying video culminate together into a masterfully produced, emotional, and soulful jaunt through Kheyfets’ best work yet. There was a long gap between ‘A Million Little Moments’ and this release, but it was well worth the wait. Kheyfets is at the top of her game and ‘Your Moon’ is indicative of a multi-faceted artist continuing her path toward making great art for many years to come.
