Rome Will Burn - 'Loving Out Loud'

Independent Spotlight is a continuing series on Stewart’s blog. The series revolves around independent artists and bands sending their music to Brett to review. No band is promised a positive review, and all music is reviewed honestly in an effort to better independent music.

About a year ago here on the Independent Spotlight, I referred to an indie electronic pop act called Rome Will Burn as one of the finest acts of the year. Their production was particularly innovative and compelling to listen to, their pop musings were effectively and tactfully penned, and their presentation exuded quality. All of this, of course, made me eager to see how Rome Will Burn would move forward. Now in the fall of 2016, we have a new single from the act called ‘Loving Out Loud.’ Is it worth picking up? Let’s dig in and find out.

Rome Will Burn previously included Manifesto, another indie artist, but is now squarely on the shoulders of Alyssa Suede, effectively making the band name her stage moniker. In some ways, this makes Rome Will Burn an even more effective entity. It’s a platform for Suede’s talent now, and she exudes personality and intensity on top of it. ‘Loving Out Loud’ is one of her finest performances as a vocalist. She’s versatile, hard-hitting, and intensely emotive.

As I touched on last year, Rome Will Burn brings two very special elements to the table: production quality and pop prowess. The former is an elegant surprise. Songs like ‘Loving Out Loud’ will sound spectacular on a quality sound system. In my studio, this anthemic single reverberated the room in a grand fashion. The prowess of Suede as a pop songwriter is vitally important, too, because penning a very good pop song takes quite a bit of work and talent, contrary to popular belief. Suede excels in this field.

‘Loving Out Loud’ is going to be a song that’s perfect for dance floors, parties, work-out playlists, and more. It doesn’t boast an immense level of depth, but it doesn’t try to pretend that it does. It’s an explosion of contemporary good vibrations. It’s perfect to let loose to, and I’m sure ‘Loving Out Loud’ is a track that’ll find itself well at home on the radio.

If you’re looking for some infectiously catchy pop music that’s especially well crafted and performed, Rome Will Burn remains the artist to look to. I’d love to see a full record on the horizon because ‘Loving Out Loud’ is too fun to be released on its own. It deserves a follow-up of equally exciting tunes that’ll get Rome Will Burn fans moving.
