Independent Spotlight is a continuing series on Stewart’s blog. The series revolves around independent artists and bands sending their music to Brett to review. No band is promised a positive review, and all music is reviewed honestly in an effort to better independent music.
In this edition of the Independent Spotlight, we’re going to be shining our gaze onto Saint Denson, an independent artist that releases music under the umbrella of the label Heavy Records. Hailing from Detroit, the hip hop DJ is the CEO of the label, and thus, the headlining act from its lineup. He’s got a new album entitled ‘The Gift’ that dropped yesterday - available for free now. Thus, let’s explore two tracks from the new endeavor to determine whether or not they’re worth adding to one’s music collection!
‘Goodnight,’ the first track we’ll be exploring, features Creech, Bang Bang, and J. Guiness alongside Saint Denson. The result is a bombastic, heavy-hitting jaunt through pretty masterful independent hip hop. Each of the performers offers a powerhouse performance, and that’s accentuated even further by a fantastic production. ‘Goodnight’ is heavily doused in electronic influence, and as a result, it has a very fresh, unique feel to it. The infectious chorus is particularly fun, and unlike so much independent hip hop, it doesn’t feel derivative at all.
The production on ‘Big Thangz,’ a song that features Jayla Brielle and J. Guiness, is similarly intriguing. Again, there’s an electronic influence, except on this song, there are tinges of rock and pop at play as well. Brielle’s performance is the highlight of the track. She injects ‘Big Thangz’ with a pop sensibility that also toys with soul and R&B stylings. The execution of ‘The Gift’ is reminiscent of Kanye West’s ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.’ The productions are explosive and riddled with featured artists that steal the show in the best possible way.
These two singles are indicative of an impressively solid endeavor. Saint Denson has armed himself with a cast of very talented performers, and he’s bringing some fantastic production to the mat. It’s very much worth checking out now that the album is available!
