Independent Spotlight is a continuing series on Stewart’s blog. The series revolves around independent artists and bands sending their music to Brett to review. No band is promised a positive review, and all music is reviewed honestly in an effort to better independent music.
In this afternoon’s edition of the Independent Spotlight, we shine our gaze on Smoking Martha, an Australian rock outfit that melds together punk and alternative musings into a rather unique sound. The five piece band has been previously lauded by critics (including myself) for their explosive, dynamic sound, and their new single, ‘What’s Her Name?,’ amps that reputation up to the next level. Is the new single worth a spin? Let’s delve into it and find out!
‘What’s Her Name?,’ which is the second single off of Smoking Martha’s upcoming record, ‘In Deep,’ offers a fiery excursion through a woman’s turbulent emotional ride upon coming to the realization that her significant other is cheating on her with another woman. ‘What’s Her Name?’ offers new contemporary meaning to the age old saying, ‘hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.’ “The screwing around just makes me mad,” lead vocalist Tasha D. declares amidst a hard rock-esque soundscape.
There’s something admirable about the volatile nature of ‘What’s Her Name?.’ Smoking Martha offers a depiction of a strong woman who has been wronged and won’t stand for it. The music video, which is especially well shot, visualizes this narrative in a fascinating fashion. The two women duke it out, throwing vases against walls and pushing each other into furniture. Oddly enough, there’s a beauty to their dance of aggression. It’s choreographed immensely well. (This is a trend for Smoking Martha, too. They really nail their music videos... much more so than most indie outfits.)
The best part of the video, however, comes when the conflict seeps into the cuts of the band performing. The two women stumble into the space where Smoking Martha is, the band effortlessly continuing their searingly intense jam as if the battle isn’t raging on around them. The razor sharp electric guitar riffs and bombastic percussion make ‘What’s Her Name?’ a real head banger. Tasha D. elegantly brings the elements together under her umbrella of graceful, suave performance.
‘What’s Her Name?’ is a terrific single very much worth giving a spin and download. It’s also indicative of ‘In Deep’ being an album very much worth picking up. That record is due out May 19, so stay tuned to band’s online presence below for continued updates!
